About  [Edit]

CUESA`s MISSION:

To promote regional sustainable agriculture through the operation of farmers` markets and educational programs

CUESA`s GOALS:

* SUPPORT regional producers, especially small sustainable family farms

* CONNECT urban residents and regional sustainable farmers

* EDUCATE consumers about sustainable practices

OUR MARKET

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is a certified farmers` market operated by the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture. Our market provides a forum for people to learn about food and agriculture. Every Saturday, five to eight thousand shoppers learn how their food is grown, who grew it and why it tastes so good. These urban dwellers develop an understanding of their connection to California`s farmland and the issues facing it.

Our market plays a key role in the movement to protect our region`s endangered agricultural resources. Our education programs focus on public interest issues such as the need for sustainable agriculture, the risks and benefits of new technologies, the urban-rural competition for water and how organic and sustainable farming protect air, water and soil quality.

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is the crucial link between San Francisco residents and the farmers who practice sustainable agriculture in our region. Purchasing directly from the farmers helps them earn more of the food dollar- a critical factor in their ability to stay in business.

THE BAY AREA: A THREATENED AGRICULTURAL TREASURE

Agriculture in our region is under extreme pressure from urbanization, competition for natural resources, and environmental degradation. There is an urgent need for Bay Area residents to learn about regional sustainable agriculture so that we can help shape public policy to protect our regional farmland over the long term.

Sustainable agriculture unites stewardship of the land with a respect for farm workers, the need for healthy food, and the crucial awareness that we must protect our natural resources for future generations.

PROTECT OUR REGIONAL FOOD RESOURCES

The Bay Area is known for the diversity and quality of its agriculture. Many urban consumers appreciate this but don`t realize that the supply of local, sustainably grown food is not assured.

Abundant, varied, local foods have long been a part of what makes San Francisco a great city. Bay Area chefs and farmers started a culinary renaissance that reaffirms the importance of healthy, local, seasonal food and stresses its direct relationship to regional, sustainable agriculture.

Only by supporting sustainable agriculture and the small, local farmers who practice it, will we continue to enjoy the finest quality produce the Bay Area can provide.
