About  [Edit]

The Society of Ethnobiology is a nonprofit professional organization dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the relationships of plants and animals with human cultures worldwide, including past and present relationships between peoples and the environment. Our interests encompass ethnobotany, ethnozoology, linguistics, paleoethnobotany, zooarchaeology, ethnoecology, and other related areas in anthropology and biology. We are committed to scholarly research and to inclusive relationships with communities with whom we work and with colleagues around the world. The Society hosts an annual conference with field trips, and publishes the Journal of Ethnobiology, a professional journal with two issues per year. We also recognize student research excellence through the Barbara Lawrence Award.

“The Meeting Place: Integrating Ethnobiological Knowledge”

5-8 May, Victoria, British Columbia

This year's conference theme, The Meeting Place: Integrating Ethnobiological Knowledge, celebrates the potential of ethnobiology to bridge disciplines, ideas, and communities, and to foster an understanding of the connections between the biological and cultural worlds.

We invite papers and posters that:

  • Are multi-disciplinary
  • Recognize the importance of traditional knowledge in conservation and restoration
  • Integrate archaeological and historical data with contemporary and traditional knowledge
  • Investigate the application of archaeobiological data to conservation
  • Integrate zooarchaeological and paleoethnobotanical data
  • Integrate ethnobotany, ethnozoology, and ethnoecology
  • Provide different perspectives on land and natural resource management

This year’s meetings will be back-to-back with the International Society of Ethnobiology congress in nearby Tofino, B.C., May 9–14. http://ise.arts.ubc.ca/congresses/future.php

Next May, come to beautiful British Columbia for both meetings to celebrate, learn, and enjoy in a full week of ethnobiological sessions, symposia, and field trips.

Poster Announcement

We encourage poster submissions. Posters are a great way to communicate about your research and can foster immediate in-depth conversations.

This year, we are planning a special poster reception on Thursday night. The posters will be prominently displayed and people can visit them while enjoying refreshments at the reception.

In addition, this year we will be offering an award for the BEST ETHNOBIOLOGY POSTER. The winner will receive a cash prize of $300.

The award is open to all poster submissions (student and non-student, single or multiple authored). A panel of judges will be assessing the posters; the award will be announced at the end of the conference. The decision will be based on both content and graphic appeal.

Note that student poster submissions are also eligible for the Barbara Lawrence Award ($500).

Never made a poster before? No worries. Follow this link to download a .pdf of how to make a poster. (Posters should be approximately 30 x 36 inches.)
