About  [Edit]

SustranslogoSustrans - the sustainable transport charity - works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects. Changing the way we travel now by increasing the amount people walk and cycle will improve our lives in the future. Clearer roads, cleaner air and a healthier environment, improved personal wellbeing and better quality of life – they`re all achievable.

Projects

Sustrans runs a number of key projects which have real local impact - imaginative yet practical solutions to transport, environmental and health challenges.By working with communities, local authorities and other organisations, Sustrans creates change by putting people at the heart of our activities. Our projects have real local impact and we share skills and experience both nationally and internationally. Sustrans projects are in place nationwide, delivering the benefits of sustainable transport to communities throughout the UK.

The National Cycle Network
Sustrans is working to give everyone the freedom to choose how they travel. The National Cycle Network is a massive series of signed cycling and walking routes linking communities to schools, stations and city centres, as well as to beautiful countryside. By 2005 the National Cycle Network will extend to 10,000 miles of routes throughout the UK, with further ambitious growth planned.

Liveable Neighbourhoods
Our Liveable Neighbourhoods project puts pedestrians on a more equal footing with cars, transforming streets into social spaces where people can enjoy their environment. The project combines techniques rooted in urban design, community involvement and sustainable transport planning.

TravelSmart
TravelSmart offers help and information to people looking to change how they travel. Since 2001, the project has used an innovative ‘Individualised Marketing` technique to increase walking, cycling and the use of public transport. TravelSmart is already helping thousands of people in the UK.

Volunteer Programme
Sustrans runs an award winning Volunteer Ranger programme. Volunteers make a difference to their communities, looking after local cycling and walking routes and enjoying the outdoors. If you`re interested in volunteering, have a look at the dedicated section on this site.
