Organization Objectives

Eco-Ethics International aims to research, promote, and enhance harmonious relationships between human communities and their natural and environmental resources by focusing on the principle of sustainability. Its goals are to:

• Assist and improve the living standards and conditions of local communities through sustainable social projects and capacity-building trainings groups
• Provide technical and entrepreneurial skill development to local community-based organizations and community groups to properly manage available coastal resources and facilities
• Carry out detailed coastal environmental impact studies with emphasis on overall ecological system changes, influences on communities, and local fauna and flora
• Investigate traditions and taboos, and the roles they play in the conservation of marine resources
• Sensitize local fishermen, community groups, coastal stakeholders, and learning institutions along the Kenyan Coast on the importance of marine conservation and environmental issues and concerns
• Conduct studies that assist in understanding adaptation strategies of communities, responses of ecosystems and their impact on biological diversity, ecological sustainability, and mediation of resource use

 

Program Information

 Eco-Ethics has successfully undertaken a wide range of projects over the past few years targeted at increasing the capacity of local community groups, such the fishing community and schools. 

Two of its successful projects include the Eco Club and an Improved Fish Quality Program to promote alternative livelihoods.

1.Eco Club as an environmental edcaution tools

Eco-Clubs is A concept that has been developped by Eco-Ethics since 2002. Nowadays, 40 schools are involved in this program.

 

2. Fisherfolk community Development

Why supporting this communities?

The fisher folk community is still using traditional techniques that make them remains fishing in the between the beach and the coral reefs.

Due to their low economic status, they have not been able to develop and adopt new fishing techniques. Thus, in some place, there are overexploitations of the fish resources and fisher folk are also using destructive gears that reduce the reproduction capacity if the fish resources.

How Eco-Ethics has supported the fish folk communities?

Eco-Ethics started to work with fisher folk community in 2000 by studying their practices and sounding the impact of the natural resources.

Then in the last six years, Eco-Ethics has implemented several projects to build the socio-economic development capacity of the fisher folk communities accompanied with environmental awareness creation.

Construction of Fish Banda

The project has been set up in partnership with the Department of Fisheries to improve the hygienic standards of fish handling thus increased fish business and economic empowerment of the fishermen. In total, five bandas have been built among the Kenyan coast.

Capacity building

To increase the socio-economic development capacities of fisher folk, Eco-Ethics have been actively involved in building the capacities of target community based organization. Since then, these groups have been used as the base of the BMU and Eco-Ethics is still supporting their development.

Munje Fishing Gear exchange

The aim of this project was to replace the destructive fishing nets with appropriate gears thus improving fish catch as well as raising their income without endangering marine ecosystem. Economic and environment meet for the benefits of the community.

Alternative livelihood project through a microfinance schemes

This project aims to support the development of alternative economic orientation of the fisher folk communities to release the pressure from in shore fishing. The project has established a revolving fund for target groups from where they can have access to loans at lower rates to initiate and develop their own projects hence the concept of micro-finance and environmental respect.

Marketing Development

Eco-Ethics is looking forward to develop marketing projects for the fisher folk community in order to increase their income.

Requirements

• Experience in grantwriting and/or proposal writing
• Knowledge or background in fundraising and ecological studies required
• Excellent research and writing skills
• Strong organizational skills

 

Note: Responsibilities offered to each participant will be proportionate to their level of experience. Participants who are new to development work may predominantly support and assist current project agendas, while those with much applicable experience may be able to assume greater responsibility. Research projects are strongly encouraged by this organization to support each program’s objective because minimal resources are currently allocated for research.

 

Working Conditions

Eco-Ethics is situated in a semi-residential area that is a 10-minute walk from the city center. The office building is well maintained and includes a reception area and numerous offices all fitted with computers, desks, and chairs.

 

Organizational Background

Eco-Ethics is a well-structured organization that is guided by a management board that consists of professionals from local industries, universities, and government departments. The staff structure is clearly defined with all staff members possessing third-level qualifications from Kenya and Germany. Its key staff members include a CEO, Program Officer, Project Officer (Education and Outreach), Fundraising Intern, Field Project Officer, Project Assistant, and Office Assistant.
