About [Edit]
Started on January 20, 2005 - Bush's second inaguration - SAW seeks to directly challenge the militarization of education and society as a whole.
As part of our ongoing campaigns, actions over the years have included teach-ins, large marches and direct actions that kicked military recruiters off campus, a Queer Kiss-In, protests at a UC Regents meetings, solidarity events and actions with a variety of on and off campus organizations in both Santa Cruz and Watsonville, various petitions, conferences, regional marches, weekly weapons inspection marches, Disorientation Tours, and much more. Many of us are also very active in a variety of other movements, especially labor solidarity and immigrant rights.
We have three working groups:
*** Counter-Recruitment ***
They actively work on countering military recruitment at UCSC and in local high schools.
*** Demilitarization ***
They challenge UC's connections it's two labs - Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos - which have produced every nuke in the US arsenal. They also challenge weapons research on campus.
*** Education ***
They work to educate/agitate the campus and community on the realities of war and what we can do about it!
