About [Edit]
Group 37 is active in AIUSA's Campaign to Stop Torture and in the Just Earth Campaign, a collaborative effort of AIUSA and the Sierra Club.
There are two basic human rights issues in Brazil. The first involves land disputes between indigenous people and wealthy landowners. The landowners frequently use violence against indigenous people and their leaders. Amnesty International urges the government of Brazil to arrest the perpetrators, bring them to trial, and enforce a strict sentence for those convicted.
The second human rights issue in Brazil concerns the conduct of the police. There are many cases where police have mistreated or even killed people in custody. There are also instances where groups within the police have formed "Death Squads" to kill the street children of Brazil's large cities. The Death Squads have also threatened human rights workers and anyone offering to testify against the Death Squads.
