The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is a United States based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization consisting of lawyers, technologists, volunteers, and visionaries working to protect fundamental human rights related to the Internet, technology and computer science. The EFF works primarily through U.S. courts and opposes all measures that threaten basic human rights, or limits to personal freedom with respect to use of technology. The EFF generally challenges legislation that threatens to limit access to the Internet and related technologies, or that in some way limits the ways in which individuals can use technology. In most cases the EFF will oppose such limitations as patents, copyrights, Digital Rights Management (DRM) and many of the more eggregious formsof intellectual property. In short, the EFF works to keep all forms of technology free, so that all may use it, modify it and redistribute it, without restriction.
The EFF works primarily in the issue areas of free speech, innovation, intellectual property, privacy and transparency. Its significant legal victories are includes lawsuits against the New Jersey Township of Manalapan for attempting to subpoena a blogger's identity, Sony BMG for illegally installing "rootkit" software onto consumers' computers and numerous others.
From the EFF website: Based in San Francisco, California, the EFF is a donor-supported membership organization working to protect fundamental rights regardless of technology; to educate the press, policymakers and the general public about civil liberties issues related to technology; and to act as a defender of those liberties. EFF opposes misguided legislation, initiates and defends court cases preserving individuals' rights, launches global public campaigns, introduces leading edge proposals and papers, hosts frequent educational events, engages the press regularly, and publishes a comprehensive archive of digital civil liberties information at one of the most linked-to websites in the world.
