About [Edit]
GOONJ.. aims to address one of the basic needs of the mankind i.e. clothing out of three i.e. food, shelter & clothing simply by addressing the urban feature of space constraint & consumerism, due to which urban household discard old clothes & other household material.
GOONJ.. channelises this material to the poorest in the far flung areas of the country, where, it not only fulfills a basic need but also frees up their meager resources for other more pressing needs.
THE THOUGHT - is very simple and straight. We ask people ‘ to give us all such material at their home or in office, which they hardly use ’. After a rigorous sorting and in a very systemic manner, it goes to needy people in the remotest parts of the country for whom these are very valuable. We collect - A growing child’s old clothes & old toys which are gathering dust in some corner of the house, utensils, clothes, blankets, one side used paper, medicines, stationary, old newspapers, magazines, anything & every thing you don’t feel like throwing away but don’t need any more. We firmly believe that anything can be reused, if we do it systematically and it has a potential to solve a major problem of someone needy.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS - It’s been more than five years when we started by collecting the material and then distributing it on the roads, pavements and outside the big government hospitals. One of the rooms in our Sarita Vihar house was converted into Store cum office and as we received a good response from the contributors, our determination to make it big, got some momentum.
WHAT WE WANT TO DO -We want to solve a very basic problem of clothing of a huge section of the society by a very basic concept of Recycling and re-use. We all know that there is a large population, which has enough material to give, and we’ve a much larger population who needs this desperately. What is required is the effort to bridge the gap.
SCHOOL to SCHOOL - A simple concept of turning wastage from urban schools into a resource for hundreds of Schools in rural India. An effort to motivate a number of urban schools and their students to donate the material they discard once their session is over. Our focus is on helping the management in sensitizing the students and their parents to the needs of their counterparts in the remote villages. It’ll help channelise their waste material like old books, uniforms, shoes, school bags etc. Over 35,000 children will be benefited through this program in this year itself.
THE STRENGTH - Although registered as a society, GOONJ.. has taken the shape of a movement, a forum for professionals. Without any major funding from any Funding organisation or Corporate, the concept of VASTRA-DAAN has grown fast and a number of people across the country are joining this voluntary movement on a regular basis.
