About  [Edit]

LBL is a UK network of organisations supporting garment workers` efforts to defend their rights and improve their wages and conditions. Members include AEKTA, Central America Women`s Network [CAWN], Ethical Consumer, GMB Buxton, GMB Lancashire Region, GMB London, Homeworkers Worldwide, National Group on Homeworking [NGH], Oxfam, Tearfund, Unison South Wales, War on Want, and Women Working Worldwide.

What are the Aims of Labour Behind the Label?

1. Draw attention to the plight of garment workers around the world, including the UK. 70% of garment workers are women, working in factories, `sweatshops` or as homeworkers. Wages are very low - often below minimum wage levels. Hours are long and forced overtime is common; health and safety standards are poor.

2. Campaign for the improvement of working conditions in the garment industry by encouraging compliance with standards laid down by the International Labour Organisation, including: ยท The right to a living wage - The right to representation and to organise - Regulations of hours and overtime pay - Provision of health and safety protection - Progressive elimination of child labour - Promotion of equality of opportunity

3. Encourage retailers to extend their responsibility for working conditions in all stages of production and to facilitate independent monitoring of labour standards.

4. Promote fairer trade and encourage support for alternative trading networks
