Consequently, after ten years, there are a vast number of people who have experience of this course all over the world. ACTION Asia, as a relatively new network in the region, has sought to bring together past participants of the Working with Conflict course from the Asia Pacific region, to provide ongoing support, follow up trainings and to more fully contextualize learning on peace building and conflict transformation. It is the intention of ACTION Asia to include in its membership others who work for peace in the region, particularly those working at grassroots and middle levels of conflict.
ACTION Asia is also a child of the international network ACTION. ACTION brings together conflict transformation and peace practitioners to share learning from their work ‘at the coalface’ and to share it with others. ACTION has initially funded the formation of an Asia Pacific network, and continues to support it in other ways.
ACTION Asia hopes not only to be a network which serves the people of the Asia Pacific region but also those seeking peace in other places. It is envisaged, that in areas such as interfaith dialogue, ACTION Asia and the African network the Coalition for Peace in Africa have much to learn from each other. Colleagues and associates in the Americas have already expressed interest in exchange visits between the regions around issues such as insurgency.
At present, ACTION ASIA is sustained by six core group members from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Burma and Philippines. The secretariat and communication center is based in Cambodia.
VISION
ACTION
Asia is network of individuals and organizations in the Asia continent
committed to action for conflict transformation through the sharing of
skills, knowledge, experiences and resources. ACTION Asia carries a
vision of a world of justice and peace, where basic needs are met and
dignity and human rights are respected.
GOALS:
- To generate a pool of resources for peace in our organizations and communities.
- To create a space for reflection and sharing of information, resources, experiences and learning.
- To nurture and energize one another in a supportive network and to promote linkages and solidarity with others working on conflict transformation.
- To address conflict at different levels, through non-violent means and promote good governance.
- To contextualize work on conflict transformation in the region.
The Values on which our vision is built, and which will guide our work together are:
- Justice, equity, peace and active non-violence
- Openness, accountability and transparency
- Tolerance, compassion and respect for human dignity
- Co-operation and commitment
- Celebration of diversity
- Conscientization and inclusiveness
To realize the above vision and goals, the Thrust of ACTION ASIA is threefold: FORMATION, INFORMATION AND TRANSFORMATION (FIT):
The
Formation Program comprises the expansion and strengthening of the
network’s membership. It primarily focuses on the conduct of trainings
on “Conflict Transformation and Peace building” for conflict
practitioners within the continent who wish to become part of the
ACTION Asia network. Other capacity building workshops specifically
respond to urgent needs of members’ conflict situations will also be
given among members to specifically respond to. It is also through this
program that various approaches are developed on how members can enrich
their sharing of knowledge and skills among themselves.
The
Information Program includes the documentation of members’ experiences
and disseminating them through newsletters which come out once every
four months. They feature success stories and learnings from our
endeavors as individuals working in our respective local communities
and countries. They also provide updates regarding events happening in
the region and in the world, as well as informative resources pertinent
in the field of conflict transformation that would benefit the members.
it is through this program that members update one another of their
struggle for peace and justice and request for or offer necessary
solidarity support from/other members in the network.
The
Transformation Program is the area of fullest witnessing to the vision
and goals of ACTION. While each network member continues to implement
ACTION programs in and through their own organizations, we see it as
our responsibility to respond to requests from countries within the
continent that have been suffering from effects of protracted conflict
particularly in terms of specific actions which can be taken to reduce
tension or advocate for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
