About  [Edit]

We are a coalition of individuals and groups who are concerned about the plight of people seeking refugee status in Australia.

Our purpose is to:

--Provide an opportunity for people to collectively voice their concerns to politicians at all levels of government and the community at large.

--Liaise and assist like-minded groups to organize events and actions which highlight the plight of refugees.

--Join in with and support national and international organizations with similar goals.

--Connect with individuals who are asylum seekers at a personal level by writing letters to people in detention.

--Promote the idea that the Tasmanian community has both the obligation and the capacity to welcome refugees for initial assessment and particularly for long-term settlement.

--Oppose mandatory detention of asylum seekers while they are being assessed.

--Encourage the Government to make available adequate resources to support people in the community once they are recognized as refugees.

--Oppose the detention of children and argue that families should remain together and be accommodated in the community.

--Express our concern that current detention policies are creating such serious stress and trauma for detainees that they may have long-term mental health issues after they are released.
