About  [Edit]

The US Social Forum is more than a conference, more than a networking bonanza, more than a reaction to war and repression.

The USSF will provide space to build relationships, learn from each other's experiences, share our analysis of the problems our communities face, and bring renewed insight and inspiration. It will help develop leadership and develop consciousness, vision, and strategy needed to realize another world.

The USSF sends a message to other people's movements around the world that there is an active movement in the US opposing US Policies at home and abroad.

We must declare what we want our world to look like and begin planning the path to get there. A global movement is rising. The USSF is our opportunity to demonstrate to the world Another World is Possible!

What We Believe

Español

We, the organizers of the first United States Social Forum:

  • Believe that there is a strategic need to unite the struggles of oppressed communities and peoples within the United States (particularly Black, Latino, Asian/ Pacific-Islander and Indigenous communities) to the struggles of oppressed nations in the Third World.

  • Believe the USSF should place the highest priority on groups that are actually doing grassroots organizing with working class people of color, who are training organizers, building long-term structures of resistance, and who can work well with other groups, seeing their participation in USSF as building the whole, not just their part of it.

  • Believe the USSF must be a place where the voices of those who are most marginalized and oppressed from Indigenous communities can be heard--a place that will recognize Indigenous peoples, their issues and struggles.

  • Believe the USSF must create space for the full and equal participation of undocumented migrants and their communities.

  • Believe the USSF should link US-based youth organizers, activists, and cultural workers to the struggles of their brothers and sisters abroad, drawing common connections and exploring the deeper meanings of solidarity.

  • Believe the USSF is important because we must have a clear and unified approach at dealing with social justice issues, and meaningful positions on global issues.

  • Believe that a USSF sends a message to other people’s movements around the world that there is an active movement in the United States opposing U.S. policies at home and abroad.

  • Believe that the USSF will help build national networks that will be better able to collaborate with international networks and movements.

  • We believe the USSF is more than an event. It is an ongoing process to contribute to strengthening the entire movement, bringing together the various sectors and issues that work for global justice.

You Comin'? Why are you here?

Interview with Alice Lovelace, National Lead Staff Organizer

    • Part 1: How is the World Social Forum connected with the U.S Social Forum?
    • Part 2: Why should the average citizen of the U.S be concerned about social problems throughout the world?

    • Part 3: What specific problems of the U.S will this forum address?
    • Part 4: What about the issue of hunger, poverty, and the working poor in the US?
    • Part 5: You said that other nations have made great strides while we lag behind. What are the strides and victories that other nations have made?
    • Part 6: When and where exactly will the social forum be held?
    • Part 7: Are you looking for volunteers?

What is the World Social Forum anyway?

Under the banner of ‘Another World is Possible,’ tens of thousands of community organizers, trade unionists, students/youth, NGO representatives, elected officials and social movements gather for a weeklong conference filled with dialogues, workshops, debates, marches, rallies, and cultural events. The WSF was created to provide an open platform to discuss alternatives to the economic plans created by multi-national corporations and the governments at the World Economic Forum. These plans often result in strategies that suppress workers and human rights, and undermine national and Indigenous sovereignty. The Forum has since become an annual event, hosting up to 100,000 people each year.

    Why is the USSF important?

The United States Social Forum comes at a significant time in US history. The conservative political right dominates the three primary institutions of the federal government. The US military is bogged down in the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan as public support for these invasions erodes. The disaster of hurricane Katrina and the failure of the federal government to respond have illuminated extreme poverty in the US and the race and class divisions in this country. The USSF will provide a process to build a powerful movement in this country based on the organized voices and experiences of those from the grassroots most affected by US and global injustices.

Who decided on a US Social Forum?

The WSF International Coordinating Council approached Grassroots Global Justice (GGJ) in June 2003 to develop a planning process for a US Social Forum. After several years of investigating how a USSF could be organized, GGJ launched the USSF Planning Committee.

Who is on the USSF National Planning Committee?

There are 35 organizations currently on the National Planning Committee, and we decided that the NPC would have no more than 50 organizations. The remaining positions on the NPC are reserved for organizations serving people of color, women or youth. If your organization would like to apply for one of the remaining positions, you can request an application. Organizations are welcome to join Working Groups without being on National Planning Committee

How was Atlanta chosen to host the USSF?

The USSF Planning Committee accepted proposals from several cities to host the USSF, and Atlanta was chosen as the host city. The Atlanta proposal focused on the political significance of the US South as the area where the worst attacks against people and greatest struggles for justice have occurred.

    Why the South?

To win nationally, we must win the US South. The Southern site of the USSF marks a new moment in the US movement for social and economic justice. Project South believes “as the South goes, so goes the nation”. These words, spoken by DuBois, ring true in every moment of American history. The roots of oppression, injustice, exploitation and social control run deep in Southern soil. The US South has also cultivated determined and consistent fights for indigenous self-determination, black freedom, working class emancipation, and human liberation. Hosting the US Social Forum in the US South builds political potency for a powerful movement to challenge white supremacy, imperial domination, worldwide genocide, ecocide, and all other manifestations of global capitalism.
