About [Edit]
AnewAmerica Community Corporation (formerly The New America Foundation) was founded in 1999 by a group of community leaders representing immigrants and community development advocates who saw a continuing lack of integrated job creation, asset development, and community empowerment strategies for low-income new Americans living in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Need
Many new Americans were barely able to make ends meet before the current recession. Studies show that one quarter of foreign-born Latino and Southeast Asian individuals in California live at or below the poverty line. Despite their high entrepreneurial energy and well-developed community support networks, newcomers from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Mexico and Central America, often find it difficult to break out of a cycle of poverty.
The Opportunity
To address this need, AnewAmerica offers a holistic three-year program, the Virtual Business Incubator, that assists new Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area to establish or expand microbusinesses, build personal assets for the sustainability of their families, and develop the community assets necessary to support the political, social, and cultural empowerment of their communities.
We link new Americans with :
colleges and universities that offer business credentials
financial institutions that provide access to credit
successful, established "old American" entrepreneurs
Our Vision
As America evolves into greater diversity of cultures, the remaking of the new "American identity" is being led by the new faces of the last twenty-five years. Latinos and Asians in particular have become the largest future majority in the State of California alone. We all have a mandate to redefine our beauty with the power of our constantly evolving culture and institutions.
AnewAmerica Community Corporation is responding to this mandate by being a bridge between the old and the new American. We are not just about economic empowerment. Our strategy of asset building for new American families is also a vehicle for political empowerment of growing communities that are not able to access the system despite long years of working and living as the invisible new Americans. Thus, our mission to contribute to the empowerment of new Americans is also how we are helping in the transformation of America into a more just and compassionate nation.
A New America stronger in its diversity, of economic empowerment, of building assets for our families, and for our communities. A New America of helping to make the new face of America. The America that forms socially responsible business people, one that builds stronger communities and bridges the new and the old American. A New America where there is no assimilation, but true integration of our oneness in our diversity.
