Habib's Garden

Connecting People to Weave a Better World

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Steve Habib Rose.  A number of us met this evening and thought that this group would be a fitting tribute. Lets use this group to recognize, honor and appreciate the many gifts and blessings he bestowed on so many of us. Please add yourself and your reflections.

About  [Edit]

Green Press Initiative is committed to advancing sustainable patterns of production and consumption within the U.S. book and newspaper industries and within the paper industry at large. GPI also advances policy innovations related to paper and climate change and recycling and incubates pioneering new strategies for market transformation.

Common Goals

There are very few corporate executives that, when asked if contributing to the loss of endangered forests was part of their business plan, would respond positively. In fact, most book publishers and printers are probably unaware that their policies are actively contributing to the loss of these valuable natural areas. This is due in large part to the fact that corporate operating principles rely almost exclusively on economic factors such as profit and loss, annual sales, growth, and market share to determine company success. The Green Press Initiative recognizes the need to be profitable and is also working to advance the inclusion of environmental and social impacts as additional measures of corporate success.

These ecological goals for industry transformation include:

  • Responsible Fiber Sourcing in Paper Production through the elimination of book papers with fiber that originates from endangered forests
  • Maximizing the Use of Postconsumer Recycled and Alternative Fibers as a means of supporting the continued development of an environmentally superior fiber infrastructure
  • Minimizing Consumption as the most effective means of conserving resources.
  • Preferencing Chlorine Free Products in an effort to support bleaching processes that minimize toxic discharges in our waterways
