About [Edit]
"To protect and preserve the North Cascade's scenic, scientific, recreational, educational, and wilderness values."
Continuing this mission, NCCC keeps government officials, environmental organizations, and the general public informed about issues affecting the Greater North Cascades Ecosystem. Action is pursued through legislative, legal, and public participation channels to protect the lands, waters, plants and wildlife.
Future Goals of NCCC :
- NCCC proposes a Cascades International Park, which would include the existing Washington's North Cascades National Park Service Complex and British Columbia's Manning and Skagit Valley Provincial Parks.
- NCCC supports U.S. Forest Service planned road closures to reduce the damaging overuse resulting from too easy access.
- NCCC is joined with other intervenors before the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC) to implement the "settlement agreement" specifying the environmentally sensitive mitigations to be enacted during Seattle City Light's next 30 years of operation of Ross, Diablo, and Gorge Hydroelectric facilities on the Skagit River.
- NCCC proposes changes in the ancient mining and grazing laws to require fee increases reflecting the true value of the resources received, thus reducing damaging impacts on wilderness and wild lands.
- NCCC is publishing a history of the North Cascades, "Conservation and Conflict" by Harvey Manning.
- NCCC proposes the enlargement of Noisy-Diobsud Wilderness Area to the proposed Noisy-Eagle Wilderness Area and addition of the south side of the Whitechuck River to the Glacier Peak Wilderness Area.
- NCCC proposes purchase of Monte Cristo mining properties for inclusion in the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness Area.
- NCCC proposes wilderness trails along the east shore of Baker Lake and on the south side of the White Chuck River (to Kennedy Hot Springs).
- NCCC opposes the development of a highly intrusive 14-unit condominium at Loggers Point on the visually sensitive shores of Lake Chelan in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. This land should be purchased by the National Park Service.
- NCCC opposes, by lawsuit, Chelan County issuance of a permit for Loggers Point which fails to protect public health, safety, and welfare and fails to preserve a valuable public resource - the scenic beauty of Lake Chelan.
- NCCC opposes permitting operation of a tourist-accommodating jet boat on the Skagit River between Marblemount and Newhalem, home to one of the largest concentrations of wintering-bald eagle in the lower 48.
- NCCC opposes major upgrading of the Mountain Loop Scenic Highway between Barlow Pass and the White Chuck River.
- NCCC opposes development of numerous small hydroelectric facilities which would degrade the scenic quality of many Cascades valleys.
