Background: The Indigenous Law Centre [formerly the Aboriginal Law Centre] was formally established at the University of New South Wales in February 1986. It takes over the role and projects of the Aboriginal Research Unit which had been established in April 1981.
Activities: The Centre has become a signficant source of information linking Australian developments with those occurring in other parts of the world. It has undertaken research on land rights in New South Wales and plans to develop a series of studies on Aboriginal land rights law in Australia. It also provides legal assistance to Aboriginal organizations and communities and has assisted with the development of teaching materials on the subject of aborigines and the law. In intends to provide opportunities for post-graduate and undergraduate scholarly work in the field and to develop and maintain a specialized collection of materials relating to Aboriginal people and the law
