About  [Edit]

Med_letterhd5 NEBF is an independent private foundation started in 1982 by the founder of New England Biolabs, Inc. to support grassroots organizations working with the environment, social change, the arts, elementary education, and science.

Guiding Principles

The philosophy of the Foundation is a reflection of the personal beliefs of the trustees: One Trustee passionately believes in the power of grassroots movements to bring about changes. Another is convinced that economic incentives, coupled with judicious management of the environment, is the key to a sustainable world. A third thinks that science and art are two complementary manifestations of our humanity.

We prefer to help organizations start their projects with the understanding that once they are established, funding from other sources will be sought.

We prefer to fund grassroots organizations and/or projects. Grassroots means that the project or organization was conceived, developed and managed by the community. Outside organizations may have been contacted for start-up help, but the eventual management of the project should be from within the local group.

In addition to funding independent organizations, the Foundation initiates programs by contracting consultants for specific undertakings.

Funding Priorities

The Foundation's funding priorities are targeted to environmental issues with special program interests in:

  • Marine conservation
  • Estuary protection
  • Sustainable economic development
  • Sustainable organic agriculture
  • Environmental education for teachers or elementary school students

Special Interests

We are focusing our grant-making to projects that think especially of the communication of the message through art and culture.

  • Some examples of these include using art to draw murals to spread the message, using theatre, masks and puppetry to tell a story; through the use of singing, music and dance; and with storytelling.
  • Visual models that show a before and after effect (i.e., clay models showing the deforestation of an area).
  • The message may be conveyed using humor as with mimes or cartoons drawings.
  • Other means of reaching larger audiences include town criers and radio programs that focus on a theme or story.
  • In other words, use your imagination to think of creative ways to spread the important work of your NGO to more listeners and to make a lasting impact by incorporating the arts and local culture.
