Who we are
What we do
| The Monitor Group, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is still led by the entrepreneurs who set out in 1983 with the ambition to create a different kind of consulting firm. They envisioned linking cutting edge intellectual property with a diverse array of human, knowledge and financial assets to help clients compete and win. |
| Since Monitor’s inception, the idea of the Institute has stood as a core pillar of the Group, providing a way to use the firm’s assets to tackle social challenges. As the Group has evolved over the past two decades, so has the Institute. The past five years of Institute experience—especially through our partnership in the U.S. with New Profit, Inc.—have yielded significant learning about how to help nonprofits make innovative, step-function changes in their mission related performance. In recent years, the Group has worked on more than 100 Institute-related projects with a variety of clients around the world. |
| Given the growing breadth and depth of Monitor’s assets and geographic presence, the Institute is now beginning a new stage of strategic experimentation with key partners and clients. Our efforts will not be limited to traditional nonprofits, nor to consulting. Our goal is to support innovators and to be an innovator. While we have long worked outside the U.S., we will increasingly be looking for opportunities to do so. We aim to identify where and how Monitor Group can most powerfully help transform the way in which complex social challenges are addressed. |

| The Problem: Humanity's collective capacity to confront the complex social, economic, environmental and governance challenges facing us is not keeping pace with our capacity—both individually and collectively—to create those problems. While much good work is being done, overall progress is slow in the face of increasing need. |
| The Opportunity: The marketplace alone cannot and will not solve social and environmental problems, and indeed at times intensifies them. But neither will government nor nonprofits alone solve them. The opportunity to accelerate progress cannot be seized without better leadership and strategies from innovative private actor—citizens, nonprofit organizations, philanthropists and corporations. There is no single magic "lever" to pull to create significant and sustained social change. Lasting solutions are likely to come from many sources that can now be integrated in new ways, in our increasingly interconnected and interdependent environment. |
