About [Edit]
| Environment & Forest DefenseNorth Coast FERC EIS Finds Klamath Dam Removal Cheaper than Relicensing posted by Dan Bacher 2007-11-20T01:11:22Z The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on November 16 issued the Final Environmental Impact Statement on the relicensing of the Klamath dams, owned by billionaire Warren Buffett. The document's economic analysis shows that the removal of PacifiCorps's lower four Klamath dams would save ratepayers $7 million a year. At the same time, Karuk Tribes' FERC negotiator Craig Tucker criticized the staff recommendations in the Final EIS for not being consistent with the mandatory terms and conditions set forth by federal agencies last year. "In the end, unless PacifiCorp negotiates a dam removal agreement with us, they're looking at building ladders at every facility and providing more water to the river at JC Boyle dam. That's the law." Their comments are spurred by the release of a new draft biological opinion from the Bush administration that they contend "fails to do enough to boost imperiled salmon runs in the seven-state Columbia-Snake River basin."(continued) Communities For Peace This years, now annual, anti-(Iraq)-War demonstration took on a new persona in the form of a demonstrative memorial for the victims of the war in Iraq which include well over the 650,000 dead Iraqis documented over a year ago as of this writing and the over 3,000 dead American service men and women. While it is unlikely that the number of participants in this year's more somber and choreographed demonstration reached the 4,000 mark as in past years there were many people present along 5th street; and many more on 4th; The full breadth of the demonstartion is difficult to depict in a couple of photos being spread up and down Highway 101 as it was but there are more larger photos here. There is also a video clip here. It is too large for easy download via dial-up modem at 141 megabytes. There is also an even lower resolution version uploaded to Google Video though that will likely be a bit much for a 56K modem also. A reduced size version is here though at 27 megabytes it is still a hefty download for dialup... This might even work on dialup;NewsWarning! Dissent May Be Hazardous To Your Health! |

The first Democrat controlled congress in many years met at the beginning of January 2007 and this small group appeared in front of Mike Thompson’s local office Wednesday, January 3rd to urge them to do what they were elected to do rather than what their corporate benefactors mandate. While the vocal group at Thompson’s office [...](continued)
