About  [Edit]

A conservation organization that encourages plans and manages wild lands and wilderness, uplifts the knowledge and lives of historically disadvantaged citizens, and stimulates an environmental ethos among current and future leaders.

The Wilderness Foundation

The Wilderness Foundation is a not-for-profit organization headed by Andrew Muir and founded in 1972 by Dr Ian Player and the late Magqubu Ntombela.  We have a 35 year history.  A National South African NGO, we are part of an international network of similar organizations within the wilderness network.

Understanding wilderness and wild lands as a positive force for social and environmental sustainability in South Africa, our work has been pioneering. Almost 100 000 participants have been through our programmes.

Historically disadvantaged youth, as well as politicial and community decisionmakers, have experienced the irreplaceable qualities of wilderness directly and the rediscovery of identity, perspective and leadership skills it tends to stimulate.

The Wilderness Foundation's work is concentrated in four areas:-

Innovative Conservation and Development; Social Intervention and job creation; Advocacy and Awareness and Experiential Education on trail.
