About ACORN
Vision
ACORN aims to enhance the viability and growth of the Atlantic Canadian organic agricultural community through a unified regional network.
Mission Statement
ACORN is a non-profit organization that promotes organic agriculture by:
* Facilitating information exchange between and amongst organizations and individuals
* Coordinating informal education for producers through to consumers
* Networking with all interested parties both regionally and nationally
Process
Based on these, the Board compiled the achievements since January 1, 2003:
1. Strengthening the organization
* Business Plan
* Secured core funding til 2006
* Secured funding for projects
* Active staff and Board
* Inspector training
* Strategic plan
2. Networking with stakeholders
* Harvest fairs/community event participation
3. Facilitating information exchange
* Resource directory
* Bigger and better conferences
* Input project
* Website
* Database of producers
* Newsletters
* Publications
* Media information
* 1-800 number
4. Lobbying for organic agriculture
* National regulatory and standards meetings
* Lobby governments
5. Coordinating informal education
* Map directory
* Potato symposium
* Organic production courses
* Organics pages on Farm Focus
6. Facilitating market development
* Marketing project
* Attending trade shows and fairs
* Trade mission participation
* Use organic food at events and meetings
Reviewing the priorities set at the last Strategic Planning session, participants reviewed the initiatives and priorities identified in 2002 identifying those that were relevant, important and urgent. They made additions where appropriate. The following were identified as being the top five issues:
1] Fundraising
2] Round tables/market needs assessment
3] Lobby for market access/distribution
4] Conference
5] Local product/sales support
These issues are to be addressed in the coming year, in addition to the significant amount of work that is on-going [website, membership, communications, administration, fiances, . Time and human resources are limited and we must focus on the projects with the greatest impact for the Atlantic Canadian organic community.
