About  [Edit]

Ggfretreat2007group

Global Greengrants Fund bridges the gap between those who can offer financial support and grassroots groups in developing countries that can make the most effective use of that support to protect the global biosphere. We help donors overcome the barriers to global grassroots grantmaking by identifying worthy organizations and moving funds at minimal cost.

With a base in Boulder, Colorado, we maintain a small staff and harness a vast network of volunteer grantmaking advisors around the world. Since 1993, we have made more than 3000 grants in over 100 countries totaling over $10,000,000.

We believe that grassroots efforts are key to solving many of the world`s environmental problems. Local people are highly aware of environmental degradation around them, and they are usually the ones most vulnerable to its ravages.

Community-based grassroots groups often are in the best position to sense, identify and address root causes of degradation, and their local knowledge and moral authority is essential for building broader public involvement and support. Although they almost always lack financial resources, grassroots groups can be a powerful force for environmental and social progress.

There is no better investment than supporting passionate people with great ideas. Every day, thourgh our network of 125 vounteer grantmaking advisors we learn about new leaders - ordinary people with extraordinary energy and commitment - the are emerging from communities around the world.

Our grants are there to support these leaders in the crucial early stages of a project. For leaders and groups that might otherwise struggle in obscurity, we can be a springboard to greater things. And some of our grantees do go on to greater things. We count among our alumni Goldman Environmental Prize winners, Ashoka Fellows and recipients of major grants from Ford, Mott, Open Society Institute, MacArthur and other prestigious foundations.

Yet, many of our grantees will never gain world-wide recognition. Many will fail to reach their goals. This too is a point of pride with us, because we know that failure can be a sign of an effective and ambitious social change leader. Our grantees often work against tremendous odds, and we are proud to stand by them and support their hopes and their initiative. We also are proud to share the risk of failure that so many of our grantees live with day to day.

We make small grants [typically $500 to $5,000] to grassroots groups in some of the world's most despoiled and impoverished places where other sources of support often are not available. See a list of our volunteer grantmaking advisors, and our grants, at: www.greengrants.org.
Or view our 3 minute video that illustrates how a small grant to a dedicated grassroots activists group is more than just a "Drop In A Bucket" at: www.greengrants.org/qt/drop.htm.
