About
Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a nonpartisan unarmed peacekeeping force composed of trained civilians from around the world. In partnership with local groups, Nonviolent Peaceforce members apply proven nonviolent strategies to protect human rights, deter violence, and help create space for local peacemakers to carry out their work.
Building upon the work of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and other unarmed peaceworkers, the vision of NP is to create a large-scale nonviolent peacekeeping force through deployments, public education, training and advocacy. NP is working in Sri Lanka for over three years, has recently deployed to Guatemala and is starting a project in the Philippines in May 2007.
Nonviolent Peaceforce brings together nearly 90 Member Organisations from five continents. Member Organisations work within their constituencies and communities to enlist support and raise awareness about Nonviolent Peaceforce activities.
Since the International Convening Event of 2002, these organisations elect the International Governance Council to oversee the mission of Nonviolent Peaceforce.
Nonviolent Peaceforce is supported by hundreds of individuals and organisations. Nobel Prize Laureates, peace activists, faith-based communities and many others around the world have endorsed our goals and projects.
Regional offices support our staff. Local Chapters in the USA work locally to support the work of Nonviolent Peaceforce and advocate for the practice of nonviolence where they live.
In 2007, NP acquired special consultative status with ECOSOC (UN).
