About [Edit]
The Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island [ECO-P.E.I.] is a community based action group formed in 1988. Our goal is to work in partnership with others and indeed the land itself in order to understand and improve the Island environment.
Our work centres on education, advocacy and action. Our members have a concern for their own health, the health of their families and the health of the ecosystem.
We are working with others on a variety of issues, such as, public transportation, pesticides and environmental education. We are represented on government and environmental committees and maintain our involvement at the grassroots level.
Whether it is talking to students about the value of biodiversity in forests, promoting pesticide reduction, or working with other community groups, we continue the hands-on work that has been the basis of our organization.

Land in Water in Crisis
All life on Prince Edward Island is sustained through land and water. Yet years of agricultural and industrial related pollution has wrecked havoc on the Island`s land and water resources. For example in the mid 1990`s a survey of intensely cultivated watershed in P.E.I. found that nearly 7% of well water samples had nitrate concentrations higher than the level recommended in the "Guidelines for Canada on Drinking Water Quality" 1
It is obvious to anyone who takes the time to look that our water and land resources on the Island are under severe stress. This is a result of a model of environmental practices which views these resources as a dumping ground for nitrates, pesticides, manure, road salt and solid waste disposal.
As Islanders become more aware of the value of these resources and the inaction of various levels of governments to protect these precious resources it is hoped that people will demand that the laws and policies are not only put in place but are enforced so that these resources, which we all share, will be respected, restored and persevered for future generations.
Green Business
There are many fine businesses on P.E.I. offering services and goods that are friendly to the environment and your health. We have only listed a sample here. As we grow the ECO-P.E.I. WEB site we will be offering advertising space for various green businesses across the Island.
It is important for all of us to remember that what we buy has a direct impact on the environment. For example, buying processed food which is shipped thousands of miles not only creates additional greenhouse gas emissions from its transport but also supports industrial food production methods which degrades the land and people`s health. Is it not far better to buy locally produced organic and/or pesticide free food at a fair price which in turn allows farmers to farm sustainably?
