About  [Edit]

In a quiet corner of the Sabarmati Ashram, nestled among the shade of neem trees, children prepare their schoolwork, play games, and help to prepare the nightly meal. Just across the sandy ground, a large, rustic building is buzzing with life. Greeting cards are being meticulously prepared by hand. First aid kits are being put together. Honorary guests are speaking. Songs are being sung. Prayers are taking place. And so continues the daily rituals for the children of Manav Sadhna, 106 of India`s poorest, engaged in educational, creative, and spiritual development.

Manav Sadhna [Ma-nav Sadh-en-a], in Hindi, means "Devotion to Mankind." As the world enters the 21st Century, technological advances such as the computer and live television broadcasts have brought us closer together, more than ever before. Yet, today the world is not a world of peace and good will toward others. It is not a world that seeks an appreciation and understanding of culture. Rather, today`s world is dangerous and turbulent. Ethnic and religious conflicts are common. Terrorism is on the rise. Religious fanaticism is gaining ground. Ethical and moral values have declined. We have become so engrossed in our daily existence that we forget the basic qualities of humanity, to love and care for others.

In 1992, a few people with a strong desire and commitment came forward to uplift the poor and oppressed people of India. Several small, but constructive humanitarian projects resulted in the creation of Manav Sadhna. Today, Manav Sadhna has grown into a solid organization that focuses on the children and women in the slums surrounding Sabarmati [Ahmedabad, Gujarat] and nearby villages.

"A Bright Future for the Slum Kids"

Manav Sadhna`s overriding philosophy is `Minimum Input, Maximum Output.` The concept of `love` is also based on this very philosophy. We at Manav Sadhna believe that children represent the innocence and love that has been forgotten in the world. Children are simple. They do not have the barriers of race, ethnicity, religion, country, profession, caste, or creed that divide us as adults.

As a developing nation, India has innumerable problems; such as poverty, illiteracy, population growth, unemployment, malnutrition, political corrupton, unsanitary practices, and the lack of equality for all people. "Untouchability" was a term used to describe the lowest and poorest caste in Indian society. These were the street sweepers and scavenger people. Today, because of the laws of a democratic nation, you no longer see the obvious signs of segregation, but the mental signs still exist. In today`s politically correct world, we must refer to these as not `Untouchable," but rather as the lowest among society, downtrodden children. Currently, in India thousands and thousands of children are forced into begging, rag picking, being servants, and many other forms of child labor. And these are the very children Manav Sadhna is committed to provide opportunities to ensure that these child labor become children again, to give them the hope and inspiration to become self sufficient and responsible citizens of their own nation and the world.
