About  [Edit]

The National Family Farm Coalition is building support for a growing international food sovereignty movement—one which seeks to guarantee the basic right of communities to choose where and how their food is produced and what food they consume. Fighting for a fair price, farmers are leading the way to change the food system.

A simplified definition of Food Sovereignty is the right of peoples, countries, and nations to decide their own food and agricultural policies, the right to produce food for their own domestic markets, the right to a fair price, and the right to protect those markets from being destroyed by the dumping of cheap imports sold below the cost of production in the country where they were grown.

The NFFC [founded in 1986] represents family farm and rural groups whose members face the challenge of the deepening economic recession in rural communities.

The combination of our member groups` grassroots strength and NFFC`s experience working on the national level enables us to play a unique role in securing a sustainable, economically just, healthy, safe and secure food and farm system. Additional power comes from collaborative work with a carefully built network of domestic and international organizations that share similar goals.

NFFC chooses its projects based on the potential to empower family farmers by reducing the corporate control of agriculture and promoting a more socially just farm and food policy.

NFFC Goals:

• Effectively challenge existing farm, food, trade and rural economic policy with policy alternatives that ensure that family farmers receive a fair price for what they produce and have access to the credit and land they need to remain in business

• Support new programs and policies that capture a greater share of agricultural profits in rural communities

• Reduce agribusiness corporations` increasing control of the food system and its excessive influence in the agricultural policy debate

• Organize to increase the effectiveness and capacity of the Coalition and its member groups
