About  [Edit]

OUR MISSION & PURPOSE:

To be an evolving village-scale community dedicated to caring for people and the Earth by learning, practicing and demonstrating the skills for creating holistic sustainable culture, in recognition and celebration of the Oneness of all life.

Permaculture Design at Earthaven: Permaculture is a set of techniques and principles for designing sustainable human settlements with plants, animals, buildings, and organizations--and especially the relationships between them. "Ecologically sound and economically prosperous" is how some describe a sustainable settlement. We teach permaculture design through Earthaven Learning Center.

We build passive-solar heated buildings of natural Earth-friendly materials, generate our own off-grid power, collect and store water from springs and roof-water catchment, and deal with our own waste through graywater recycling, constructed wetlands and composting toilets. We practice sustainable forestry and preserve many of our wilderness areas. We are not yet growing and raising our own food, however, this is important to us and is one of our next steps.

Individual Earthaven members can offer Work Exchange opportunities [and more rarely, Apprenticeship opportunities], for periods of from several weeks to several months. Work Exchangers and Apprentices work for and report to individual Earthaven members, not Earthaven itself. [See Earthaven Internship Program.] Room and board is provided to Work Exchangers in trade for approximately 24 hours a week labor and minimal monthly facilities and other fees.
