The Mississippi River Basin Alliance (MRBA) is a network of diverse organizations and individuals whose purpose is twofold:

1) Protect and restore the ecological, economic, cultural, historical and recreational resources in the basin, and:

2) Eliminate barriers of race, class, and economic status which divide us in the quest to achieve these purposes.



MRBA conducts its work in two primary ways:

1) MRBA maintains local and regional networks of member groups and partner organizations to support local grassroots efforts. Our objective is to increase the capacity of grassroots organizations to engage environmental issues in local communities; and to encourage collaborative strategies to solve the water quality problems local communities are facing. Our long-term goal is to help local communities throughout the basin to establish effective water management systems that will improve water quality, protect drinking water resources and provide a healthy environment for future generations.

2) MRBA organizes and conducts regional and national campaigns to address systemic environmental problems and promote policies that will help to restore and protect the ecosystem as a whole. MRBA has developed an extensive collaborative network of national environmental, environmental health and environmental justice organizations that work together to leverage resources and comprehensively address environmental policy issues. MRBA has also established an extensive network of working relationships and partnerships with government and public policy institutions throughout the basin. To coordinate basin wide and national campaign activities MRBA maintains regional offices, each with a small but resourceful staff capable of implementing innovative programs and public policy initiatives. MRBA has offices in Minneapolis, St. Louis and New Orleans.
