The mission of the Institute is to make a worthwhile and significant contribution to sustainable development through research, consultancy and education provision of the highest standards. These activities help improve quality of life for communities and individuals, and facilitate wealth creation.
The Institute employs engineers, architects, planners, building scientists, social scientists and computer scientists.
The Institute received a 4 rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.
The Institute is a founder member of the Faraday Partnership for Integration of New and Renewable Energy in Buildings.
Research Degrees in Energy and Sustainability:
-Master of Philosophy [MPhil] and Doctor of Philosophy [PhD] degrees can be pursued either by full time or part time research in the Institute or from a research base elsewhere.
-Mentored by international experts in a wide range of subject areas.
-Applications are welcome from well qualified graduates and experienced professionals wishing to pursue scientific and socio-economic research in subjects relevant to sustainable development
The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development [IESD] organises a range of one day training courses designed for Continuing Professional Development [CPD]. The courses are designed to develop skills and knowledge in a range of areas associated with energy and general sustainability. They are built upon the IESD`s MSc programme and tailored to meet the needs of specific target groups.
Consultancy Services
The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development [IESD] has an international reputation for its consultancy work to support sustainable development. Consultancy focuses on improving the environment in and around buildings through the application of state-of-the-art computer technology and performance monitoring, and in the development of energy and environmental policies within the context of a low carbon future.

Climate Change & Sustainable Development
Provides detailed knowledge of climate change abatement strategies
-Develops understanding of the routes to a sustainable future and its potential for improving our quality of life
Energy and Sustainable Building Design
-Sustainable approaches to building design
-Advanced computer modelling methods
