Background: AHAVA was created in 1990 by four individuals who decided to return to the countryside and create a network of human rights educators.
Objectives: Its objective is to teach the rural population about their rights, as based on the International Bill of Human Rights, the African Charter of Human and Peoples` Rights, the Penal Code, and other relevant national laws.
Activities: AHAVA is a network of lawyers, magistrates, teachers and rural workers who donate their time on a pro bono basis. It has a school with a human rights program, which gives particular emphasis to women`s rights and children`s rights; a legal education program for local elected officials; teaches human rights in regular schools; and trains paralegals and legal education trainers.
