About [Edit]
Since the early 1990s, Tanzania has witnessed a visible increase in the number of children living and working on the street, predominantly as a consequence of poverty and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Children who live and work on the street are vulnerable to extreme violation of their rights, different forms of abuse and have difficulties accessing basic services. Excluded from mainstream society, many of these children become involved in crime and substance misuse, becoming trapped in a cycle of poverty, abuse and violence.
The Project:
Mkombozi, ChildHope’s partner organisation in Tanzania, has been working with street children in Moshi for almost a decade. The project plays an important role in reducing the number of children working and living on the streets of Moshi, to advocate their rights and help strengthen their communities.
Aims:
- Re-integrate street children with their families
- Members of local communities better able to support reunified children and children / youth coming to the streets by building community understanding of child rights
- Drama groups for children
- Peer education and mentoring programmes set up in local schools and communities
- Learning from the programme documented and shared.
