Nepal Internet Users Group (NIUG) started in 1997 as a group of people interested in the use of the Internet and e-mail in Nepal. This informal group was primarily established to share new ideas, difficulties and information regarding the Internet. Members met on a regular basis to share their knowledge and organized training programs with the purpose of encouraging newcomers and popularizing the Internet Technologies.
In April 1998, the group outgrew the old informal setup and was registered as a membership based nonprofit, Non Governmental Organization (NGO). In effect, it became the first and only Information and Computer Technology (ICT) - oriented NGO operating in Nepal, focused on development and provision of ICT supported social services.
