The Oregon Environmental Council safeguards what Oregonians
love about Oregon – clean air and water, an unpolluted landscape and healthy
food produced by local farmers. For 40 years we’ve been a champion for
solutions to protect the health of every Oregonian and the health of the place
we call home. We work to create innovative change on three levels: we help
individuals live green; we help businesses, farmers and health providers thrive
with sustainable practices; and we help elected officials create practical
policy. Our vision for Oregon includes solving global warming, protecting kids
from toxins, cleaning up our rivers, building sustainable economies, and
ensuring healthy food and local farms. Join thousands of Oregonians by becoming
a member today at www.oeconline.org.
Our priorities:
1. Protect kids` health from toxic pollution.
Vision: By 2010, the "dirty dozen" most toxic pollutants in Oregon will
have declined by at least 30% and be well on their way to elimination.
Oregon parents and caregivers will protect our children from toxic
chemicals, even before birth, as vigilantly as we now protect them from
tobacco smoke or alcohol. As a result, we hope to see declines in
asthma, cancer and other health problems triggered by pollution,
especially among children.
2. Clean up the Willamette and other major rivers.
Vision: By 2010, the Willamette and other major rivers, such as the
Rogue and the Deschutes, will no longer violate standards that protect
people from bacteria, toxic chemicals and other pollutants. Household
pollution prevention efforts will be a part of everyday living, just as
recycling is today. Oregon`s farmers will be national leaders in
protecting clean water while thriving economically. As a result, future
generations of Oregonians will be free to swim, boat and fish in our
rivers - and to eat what they catch - without fearing for their health.
3. Protect our climate by curbing vehicle pollution.
Vision: By 2010, Oregon drivers will produce at least 20% less carbon
dioxide [CO2] than they did in 2001. We will achieve this by driving
vehicles that are, overall, at least 10% more fuel-efficient, and by
choosing to reduce our driving by at least 10%, as well. As a result,
Oregonians will live in a healthier environment and show leadership by
exceeding the goals of the international "Kyoto Treaty" on global
warming.
4. Build support for effective environmental policy in the Oregon Legislature.
5. Build support for environmental protection among agricultural, health and business leaders.
