About [Edit]
The “Network for political and social rights”/”Diktyo gia ta politika kai koinwnika dikaiwmata” is a “Left”, in its wider sense, plural, multi-thematical, “movemental collectivity”, as one of its spokesmen like to refer to it, whose main objective is the defense and promotion of political and social rights. It has been active throughout the 90s however the initiative, as such, has been around since 1986 but under the name “Movement for the defense of political and social rights”. During its 10 year old action, the Network, has been active both for local/national and international causes. Its central view is that: the struggle for rights, of all sorts, is the struggle for the change of power relations in society having as a perspective, from the one hand, social liberation (which is needed and possible) and, from the other, the expansion of free spaces for the oppressed, the workers, the youth, minorities and other social groups within our society.
Its main areas of interest and action are:
a) state repression and its expression; that is, preventive repression, control; direct repression; ideological repression (“ideological terrorism”)
b) racism and xenophobia; where in cooperation with the “Network for social support of refugees and immigrants”, sister organisation, they try : i) to inform society concerning the entry and the existence of immigrants in Greece ii) confronting the wide spread xenophobia, that is present in Greece, toward economical and political refugees iii) support of immigrants’ demands for their legalisation and the consolidation of basic rights for housing, work, social security and their life in general iv) provide practical solidarity (legal support, Greek language school for adult immigrants etc.)
c) nationalism; within which they have put a wide action for solidarity to Balkan countries; meetings, trips, exchanges.
d) Neo-liberal globalization; two main axes for activities already from the mid 90s i) E.Z.L.N. solidarity campaign and ii) European Marches against unemployment, lack of job security and exclusion.
e) the “New World Order” wars (Iraq, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan etc.)
f) internationalist solidarity; supporting the struggles of the Cypriots, Kurds, Palestinians etc.
To attaint its objectives the “Network” acts both through traditional channels (demonstrations, meetings, propaganda) and non traditional ones (symbolical actions, recollections of funds for political prisoners, legal, practical and social assistance for immigrants and refugees, the creation of a cultural centre, “Anti Racist Festival” etc.).
