AFAO is the peak non-government organisation representing Australia`s community-based response to HIV/AIDS. AFAO`s work includes education, policy, advocacy and international projects.
AFAO has as its vision statement:
Our communities living with, affected by and fighting HIV/AIDS can rely on the AFAO Secretariat team for information, advocacy and policy of uncompromising quality.
AFAO aims to:
Advocate on behalf of its members at the federal level thereby providing the HIV/AIDS community with a national voice;
Support and work closely with NAPWA as the national representative organisation of people living with HIV/AIDS;
Support and work closely with Scarlet Alliance as the national representative organisation of sex workers, and AIVL as the national representative organisation people who inject drugs;
Develop, formulate and promote national policies on HIV/AIDS;
Develop education programs for gay men, HIV-positive people and Indigenous Australians, in collaboration with its members;
Facilitate the exchange of information and expertise among its members;
Promote and support representation by AFAO and its members at national and international forums;
Promote, and collaborate with, medical, scientific and social research into HIV/AIDS and its effects;
Utilise AFAO and its member’s expertise to work with communities in the Asia-Pacific region to deal with HIV/AIDS;
Work with government and community organisations representing Australian Indigenous populations and HIV/AIDS issues;
Assist member organisations to respond to HIV/AIDS in Australia.
