About [Edit]
NO Nukes was organized in June 1985, following the popular protest and general people's strike against the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. It is a coalition of 59 organizations, with chapters in Central Luzon, Cebu, Manila and Davao.
Activities: NO Nukes is involved in education and lobby work. It presented legislative proposals for mechanisms to implement a nuclear-free state policy in the 1986 Philippine Constitution. That lobby work was reinforced by a campaign which gathered 50,700 signatures for the nuclear-free constitutional provision. While the Constitutional commission (Concom) was debating on the provision, NO Nukes, in coordination with the Nuclear Free Philippines Coalition (see separate entry), organized a nuclear "die-in" at the Concom lobby. In April 1986, NO Nukes organized a picket which led to the "mothballing" of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. NO Nukes has a 10-point proposal for an unconditional ban on nuclear weapons and for the prohibition of facilities that support nuclear power and waste disposal. The proposal also called for abrogation of the Philippines-US Military Bases Agreement and the pull-out of US military personnel within one year of abrogation. NO Nukes is also working for the organization of nuclear affairs committees in every cause-oriented group in the Philippines.
