About  [Edit]

Homowo African Arts & Cultures began as a dream...

Can we build an organization here in the United States to spread the rich cultural traditions of Ghana, West Africa? So many of Obo’s memories of his childhood and youth are entwined with the rich drumming and dance traditions that were a part of every day of his life. After years of performing and teaching in the Pacific Northwest, it became clear that there was a need to pull this together into a more comprehensive concept. Why not create a center for all of this cultural richness, right here in Portland, Oregon, Obo’s adopted home!!

Since its birth in 1986, Homowo African Arts & Cultures has existed as a virtual center with offerings in schools, parks, community centers and performance venues all over the country. With the support of the board of directors we are now dreaming of creating a physical center–an actual place to enjoy taking classes, eating African food, viewing African art and sharing in dialogue with friends and acquaintances.

The musicians and dancers of Homowo are living examples of the strength of African performing arts. Our repertoire, featuring the yesterday, today and tomorrow of Ghanaian cultural arts, creates an aural and visual history of Ghana.

On behalf of the board of directors, staff and artists, we welcome you to the spirit of Homowo -- Akwaaba (Welcome)!!
