About  [Edit]

The purpose of the Lagoon Society is to preserve and enhance the natural habitat and wildlife of the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve, to partake in environmental education, and to assist in monitoring the ecological health of the region.

The Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve is a 10 hectare reserve featuring a freshwater lagoon and forested acreage on the Sunshine Coast, northwest of Vancouver. The Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society is a non-profit society and registered charity incorporated in April 2002 (Charitable #: 85237 7530 RR0001).

The purpose of the society is the furtherance and promotion of wildlife conservation, and in particular:
  1. the protection and enhancement of the natural habitat of Ruby Lake Lagoon;
  2. preservation and management of the surrounding habitat and wildlife at the lagoon;
  3. to promote such charitable endeavours or activities, including the acquisition, management, and disposal of land and interests in land, as may in the opinion of the society board of directors appear
  4. to partake in wildlife educational and outdoor activities such as:
    • establishing a field studies/interpretive centre for all ages;
    • offering facilities for identification courses;
    • undertaking long-term ecological studies of the local region;
    • assisting in monitoring the ecological health of the region.

      The Society built and operates the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre which has been designed to help all ages to explore and appreciate the natural wonders and cultural amenities of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast.

        The Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre serves as the base for many exciting community and school programs. These include an innovative Nature School Program for elementary and secondary school students, along with interpretive programs, workshops, lectures, slideshows and tours for the general community, and adult education courses for university and college students, professionals, hobbyists, and amateur naturalists. A wetland restoration project is helping to create valuable habitat for wildlife and is giving community members a hands-on opportunity to work to improve the environment.

         The Interpretive Centre houses a collection of interpretive displays characterizing human interaction with the natural environment from the mountains down to the sea. It serves as a base for many exciting community and school programs, including children’s activities, adult education courses and workshops, guided nature walks and field trips, slide shows and lectures, public forums, and an innovative Nature School Program for children.
