About [Edit]
AdaptLocal is being created to design and provide special purpose Web sites and training to support local resiliency and climate adaptation. It's purpose is to inform, foster communication and reduce local uncertainty during times of unstable climate. Here is our current thinking (as of 1/30/08) - we invite your questions and comments.
Each special purpose Web "portal" will include information resources and social tools to reinforce local decision making for mitigating the impacts of global warming. As local governments install AdaptLocal portals, they will become nodes in a growing knowledge-sharing network. Citizens and their local governments will use the sites to distribute current and relevant information, take part in online discussions and meetings, keep up to date with local risk assessments and "vital sign" conditions for the area -- water supply, rainfall, storm intensity, sea level rise. As technology evolves, AdaptLocal's adaptable design wil evolve along with it.
As a social entrepreneurship venture, AdaptLocal portals will be sold to local governments, who will manage them and host online deliberation, education and civic collaboration programs. Global news and science gathered by AdaptLocal will inform government planners, who will in turn keep local populations informed. Citizens will use the portals to organize and announce activities, share local adaptation-related news and communicate with citizens living in other locations, connecting through other portals.
AdaptLocal anticipates the world as it is likely to be, once climate change has begun impacting many aspects of daily life and business. Our tools and services will help relieve local uncertainty and anxiety by providing assurance and association. A network such as AdaptLocal's will keep humanity in touch with itself across the wide range of conditions in the places we each call Home. A network such as AdaptLocal's may prove to be the communications "ark" that helps get humanity through the long night of climate instability.
