About  [Edit]

Welcome to our home, our business and our lifestyle.

Our intention is to develop a living example of applying permaculture principles to the design of our house and land as a framework toward sustainable living.

We [John and Sharon Champagne] began to develop our property in 1995 following unfulfilled suburban hopes for our young family while living in Melbourne. From reliant consumers to thoughtful producers is a journey illustrated on our website.

Brogo Permaculture Gardens will be running a number of courses during 2005, three Introduction to Permaculture weekends at our own property and a Permaculture Design Certificate [12 day ] Course. With Brogo Permaculture Gardens as the living classroom, its designer and developer John Champagne will inspire in participants an understanding of the basics of permaculture. Demonstrations, visual aids and hands on activities will complement the teaching.

Brogo Permaculture Gardens is a 5-hectare property where development began in 1994. It is nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Bega Valley just north of Bega. The Brogo locality offers the course participants a vibrant mix of climatic zones as well as social and cultural diversity.

Some of the features you will observe at Brogo Permaculture Gardens are:

An owner built mudbrick home with an earth floor, hardwood timbers and an energy efficient cool cupboard.

An active photovoltaic solar panel power supply, solar hot water and a slow combustion stove.

Over 150 fruiting plants including nearly 50 different species ranging from semi-tropical to berries.

An efficient and productive vegetable area attached to a managed poultry system

Keyline features for water harvesting

microclimate design with wind and fire as determinates

Biological control of blackberries with a goat

creative living with children.
