About [Edit]
"In 2005, for the first time in human history, more people will live in urban areas than in rural areas. This transformation has already had a huge impact on the planet`s resources, as well as an impact on our perspective of nature and the environment. No prior human experience offers a guide on how to feed, house and sustain so many people in so many cities. This generation must be committed to the task of bringing urban areas into balance with the natural environment".*
The World Green Building Council, together with it`s members [made up of Green Building Councils from around the world] are committed to achieving this balance.
We are committed to changing the property industry. The property industry is defined as all those who produce, develop, plan, design, build, alter, or maintain the built environment, and includes building materials manufacturers and suppliers as well as clients and end use occupiers.
A sustainable property industry will balance environmental, social and economic issues to ensure a viable and valuable industry for future generations. Buildings account for one-sixth of the world`s fresh water withdrawals, one-quarter of its wood harvest, and two-fifths of its material and energy flows. [Roodman and Lenssen, 1995].
The World Green Building Council will be the peak global not-for-profit organisation working to transform the property industry towards sustainability.
By bringing together the Green Building Councils from around the world we are working together to share knowledge, resources and common principles to advance the development of greener buildings. We will also provide other countries wishing to start their own Green Building Council with a diversity of solutions and representation to ensure a successful start-up.
