About [Edit]
The Learning Communities Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to changing how all citizens, giving special attention to low-income and historically neglected communities, ensure that their children experience schooling and learning opportunities that enable them to pursue their own American dream.
What We Believe . . .
We believe it is time to address whether public schools and systems are responding to the needs and aspirations of the communities they are supposed to serve. It is time to create more democratic and community-driven infrastructure that will ensure that quality learning opportunities are available for all children. Low-income and historically neglected communities are the most poorly served by our present systems. LCN is committed to supporting schooling and learning opportunities that are driven by the needs and aspirations of these communities.
And Why . . .
Public education began in this country as a unique aspect of American democracy. Communities created and ran schools that served their needs. As the nation grew, the broader public interest in education grew, and systems of schools were created. Sadly, over time, the systematization of education has served in many ways to cut individual communities off from their schools. It is now time to establish a truly American approach to education.
Our Work
LCN is working to create a more democratic, community-driven approach to schooling while continuing to support efforts to improve the current schooling experience in low-income and historically neglected communities. Our goals therefore are:
1) To build the capacity and infrastructure that will enable communities to ensure quality education for all children
2) To call for and support improvements in existing public schools and systems
3) To capture and communicate the lessons of our work
