Contraste tranché et assumé avec l'esprit utopique de la jeunesse des années 60 et 70, et le culte effréné de l'ego des années 80 et 90, la Génération Polluée est celle qui perçoit ces années comme faisant partie du même bloc historique et idéologique. Nuke est l'image de cette génération qui est "post" tout, la génération du derniers arrivés, qui n'existe qu'après "l'événement".
Rêver de demain, inventer cent nouvelles quêtes dun idéal commun, faire du global une chance et du local un support de la qualité de vie échouer bien sûr mais recommencer encore ! Voilà le vrai, le seul réalisme acceptable.
La Génération Polluée doit trouver et porter, ici et ailleurs, les utopies absolument nécessaires et les idéologies vitales. Certainement pas pour les écrire sur papier bible ou les relier en petits livres rouges mais pour fédérer des talents, pour imaginer à nouveau et réaliser nos modes de vie de demain.
Face aux enjeux et aux obsessions du monde contemporain, à la mutation de notre environnement, aux jeu des forces économiques, à l'état inquiétant de la planète, à la destruction et la beauté, la Génération Polluée ne se cherche plus de raison dêtre, plus de raison de se maintenir, elle invente et re-invente tous les jours notre futur, des nouveaux mondes, en se créant un mythe.
The theme Polluted Generation derives from the dystopic ambition Nuke set for itself at its inception, to serve as an extended “self-portrait of a Polluted Generation” by giving space and opportunities for young artists, writers and designers to express themselves. The work presented by Nuke explicitly engages with the themes and issues within the wider world, such as historical change, economic forces, death, guilt, destruction and beauty, as opposed to work that is myopically focused with the internal concerns of art making.
In sharp contrast with either the utopian/spiritual spirit that informed youth culture in the sixties and seventies and painted itself as a resistance movement to the oppressive forces of global capitalism and political despotism, or the rampant egotism of the eighties and nineties, the definition of the Polluted Generation presents an image of a generation, in the West, that is “post” everything, a generation of late arrivals, who exist after the event. Faced with increasing geo-political instability, the very real threats of global warming that promise catastrophe to Europe’s densely packed, costal areas and the massive shift of economical and political power from West to East, the Polluted Generation finds itself struggling for a raison d’être or sustaining, animating myth.
