Internet Society Mission Statement

"The mission of the Internet Society is to promote the open development,

evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout

the world."



The Internet Society:

- Facilitates open development of standards, protocols, administration and the technical infrastructure of the Internet

- Supports education in developing countries specifically, and wherever the need exists

- Promotes professional development and builds community to foster participation and leadership in areas important to the evolution of the Internet.

- Provides reliable information about the Internet

- Provides forums for discussion of issues that affect Internet evolution, development and use -- technical, commercial, societal, etc.

- Fosters an environment for international cooperation, community, and a culture that enables self-governance to work

- Serves as a focal point for cooperative efforts to promote the Internet as a positive tool to benefit all people throughout the world

- Provides management and coordination for on-strategy initiatives and outreach efforts -- humanitarian, educational, societal, etc.



Internet Society Guiding Principles:

-Open, unencumbered, beneficial use of the Internet.

-Self-regulated content providers; no prior censorship of on-line communications.

-On-line free expression is not restricted by other indirect means such as excessively restrictive governmental or private controls over computer hardware or software, telecommunications infrastructure, or other essential components of the Internet.

-Open forum for the development of standards and Internet technology

-No discrimination in use of the Internet on the basis of race, color, gender, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

-Personal information generated on the Internet is neither misused nor used by another without informed consent of the principal.

-Internet users may encrypt their communication and information without restriction.

-Encouragement of cooperation between networks: Connectivity is its own reward, therefore network providers are rewarded by cooperation with each other.



Purposes and Goals of the Organization:

Its principal purpose is to maintain and extend the development and availability of the Internet and its associated technologies and applications - both as an end in itself, and as a means of enabling organizations, professions, and individuals worldwide to more effectively collaborate, cooperate, and innovate in their respective fields and interests.



Its specific goals and purposes include:

-development, maintenance, evolution, and dissemination of standards for the Internet and its internetworking technologies and applications;

growth and evolution of the Internet architecture;

-maintenance and evolution of effective administrative processes necessary for operation of the global Internet and internets;

-education and research related to the Internet and internetworking;

-harmonization of actions and activities at international levels to facilitate the development and availability of the Internet;

-collection and dissemination of information related to the Internet and internetworking, including histories and archives;

-assisting technologically developing countries, areas, and peoples in implementing and evolving their Internet infrastructure and use;

-liaison with other organisations, governments and the general public for coordination, collaboration, and education in effecting the above purposes.



ISOC.nl is the Dutch chapter of ISOC. ISOC was founded in 1992 by the people who invented and built the internet "to assure the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world." ISOC works on facilitating a progessively better cooperation of internetprofessionals, organisations, governments, universities and companies towards a better internet, and to further extend the use of the internet for society. The Dutch branch of this truly global organisation, ISOC.nl, was founded in 1997, and is among the largest and most active of its kind in the world.



ISOC.nl is actively involved in achieving and promoting internet standards, researching the use of the internet in democratic and governmental processes and keeping the discussion within and around the internet community alive.
