About [Edit]
Living Oceans Society is a non-profit research and public education organization that promotes the need for a healthy ocean and healthy communities on Canada’s Pacific Coast.
We are based in the island community of Sointula on British Columbia’s Central Coast. Sointula, on Malcolm Island, is a historic fishing village that was established as a utopian Finnish community. Based on the rich fishing and aboriginal traditions that surround us, we strive to combine our conservation vision with the economic and cultural needs of the people who live and work on this magnificent coast. We believe that people are integrally part of the environment and by striving to conserve the ocean’s wealth and abundance we can build sustainable communities today and for future generations.
Our programs include:
• Establishing a network of marine protected areas
• Stopping the negative impacts of salmon farming
• Maintaining the moratorium on offshore oil and gas development in Canada’s Pacific Ocean
• Developing fisheries that are ecologically and economically sustainable
