About [Edit]

The Story of Stuff is an online video and resource center that focuses on the inherent problems of our present materials economy. Since this economy is based on exploitation and perpetual growth, we find ourselves in a system of crisis "because you can't run a linear system on a finite planet." (A. Leonard)
Story of Stuff cuts to the heart of the problem in a way that is both entertaining and informative. Utilizing a straight forward narrative, and simple animated sketches, Story of Stuff allows the viewer to make connections between broad themes such as 'resource extraction', 'production', 'distribution', 'consumption', and 'disposal'. Annie's delivery eases the audience into the devastating truth about our present circumstances regarding our consumption patterns and the rapid decline of the natural systems on which we depend.
Since the website's launch in December we have recieved an overwhelming response from the public. The film has been seen by more than 3 million people in all but 2 countries worldwide, and we have gotten over 30,000 emails from concerned people wondering what to do next. This is a good sign, and we are working very hard to build an ifrastructure that encourages citizen participation in the many interconnected non-profits, and NGO's who are already active in these fields.
So come and visit us online at www.storyofstuff.org, view the fillm, host a screening, use it to encourage dialogue within your community. We have many resouces available for you to download. We hope you enjoy, let's get this world back on track!

SOS brilliantly shows the problem at whole system level, giving the public the inspiration that Kenneth Boulding tried to give economists 43 years ago. The film also points towards helpful solutions of the variety 'what can we do locally'. This is half of the story about solutions and it would be great to see a future film present the other half with the same clarity and sense of fun. As well as helping the 'players' to run around more usefully we also need to change the 'rules of the game' in order to switch paradigms to work for people and planet. This might not be particularly complicated to do nor need it take much time to make the switch. Don't you think it would be good to try, since we don't have much time?
