About [Edit]
Mission: Groundswell NW formed to maintain and enhance play space at Ballard's historic Webster School, which was about to be sold as surplus school property. During the process of creating Webster Park, we defined a set of goals which continue to guide our activities in Ballard:
* Promote acquisition, retention, and improvement of public lands for public purposes.
* Promote play areas for children.
* Support other organizations concerned with open space, recreation, and "greening" issues.
* Promote community education.
Ongoing Projects
Open Space Acquisition
Groundswell NW remains committed to addressing the lack of open space in the Ballard area. We are actively pursuing purchase of open space, surplus City Light substations and other vacant or underutilized property. For our latest acquisition project, see the City of Seattle Pro Parks project information page.
Street Trees
Groundswell NW helps anyone interested in getting street trees for the planting strips near their homes.
Waterfront Street Ends
Groundswell NW is working with Friends of Street Ends to improve and reestablish public use of waterfront street ends. For example, at the NW 57th Street End volunteers have improved the secluded beach with landscaping and seating.
Traffic Circles
Groundswell NW has acted as fiscal agent for small community groups interested in establishing traffic circles to ease speeding on neighborhood streets and create islands of green in a sea of pavement.
Community Environmental Education
Groundswell NW is actively planning programs on issues such as salmon, gardening, urban wildlife. Our "Salmon in Ballard: A Local Perspective" event in the spring of 2001 was the first in a series of community outreach events we are planning to raise public awareness of the need to improve our urban environment.
Marine Protected Area from Golden Gardens to Carkeek Park
Along with the Carkeek Watershed Community Action Project, Groundswell NW is co-sponsoring a study group to develop and implement solutions to restore the local marine habitat.
North Salmon Bay Community Forest Plan
Groundswell NW obtained a state Natural Resources (DNR) grant to develop a watershed and urban ecological plan to improve our local habitat over the next 50 years.
Ballard/Crown Hill Open Space Inventory and Action Plan
Groundswell NW initiated an outreach project which opened a community dialogue on parks and open space and recruited neighbors to walk and map the entire district. Over 200 opportunities for acquiring and/or enhancing open space and parks were identified. A series of public forums then established community priorities for open space development and acquisition.
