Habib's Garden

Connecting People to Weave a Better World

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Steve Habib Rose.  A number of us met this evening and thought that this group would be a fitting tribute. Lets use this group to recognize, honor and appreciate the many gifts and blessings he bestowed on so many of us. Please add yourself and your reflections.

Our Vision

Supporting a Conservation Economy in BC

We see BC leading North America in a commitment to conservation and a way of life that includes a stable, vibrant, and forward-looking economy based on the best practices of environmental stewardship.

We believe BC is in a position to emerge as the most important innovator and leader in demonstrating a sustainable region.

We support a strong role for government as a steward of the 'commons' - those resources which are the essence and root of society.

We recognize aboriginal land rights as the beginning place of a sound future in BC.

Many dynamic charities are leading the way in finding solutions to daunting environmental, economic, and social problems that face us.

Our Mission

1) A Catalyst for Change and an Investor in Capacity

As a private foundation, Endswell works to be a catalyst for positive change. Through a strategic selection process, we invest charitable dollars in what we feel are the most effective and visionary environmental groups in BC, working on issues with the greatest potential to leverage impact.

Making charitable investments that help to build the professional capacity of charities is of central importance to us. We work with our grantees to fund them in a way that helps them increase their potential for reaching their goals. We also have close and sustained funding relationships with a number of organizations whose role is to work with the environmental community in BC to grow communications, management, strategy, and coalition-building skills.

2) A Call to the Philanthropic Community

Beyond supporting selected charities in the pursuit of a diversity of public interest goals, Endswell places a great deal of importance on our role as a communicator and motivator within broader regional, national, and international donor communities. We fund as broadly as our budget will allow, while also highlighting the successes of BC's conservation community to those new to their contributions.

In an era of diminishment of the commons, with decreasing government responsibility and increasing concentration of power and resources in the corporate sector, Foundation dollars are becoming more essential than ever.

We aim to inspire others who have "more than enough" to make their values manifest by committing funding and resources to the public interest and community well being.

We gladly share what we learn with individuals and organizations that are exploring how to optimize their own social impact with their wealth.

3) Mission Based Fund Management

To maximize the positive social, environmental, and economic impacts of our philanthropic investments, we extend our mission to the management of our foundation's underlying asset-base. This means that we select our investments based on social screening, as well as making program-related investments. We increasingly are placing our funds in income earning projects that are more directly in line with the program of our Foundation.

We're excited to be part of an expanding community of donors who are looking at how our financial investment decisions can dovetail with our values and charitable giving practices.
