About [Edit]
ICTs for Rural Africa makes use of ICTs to develop rural communities. Africa can be developed like countries in the west. Poverty can be alleviated if the majority of the population is informed, uplifted and empowered. The majority population is found in the rural areas. People living in the cities have it all, be it access to latest news/information, access to clean water and sanitation, access to electricity, better education (schools & teachers), better health, better houses, fresh food etc. These inequalities can be leveled out by people living in the cities through supporting projects of this nature, which are earmarked for rural development. Generally speaking rural people are not informed for this reason they cannot make any well-informed decisions for instance choosing the right leader for their own country. Normally they will be cheated for their vote at the last minute and election cycle after cycle they fall into the same trap, because they lack the analytical mind which city people have learned from elsewhere via the media.
The uniqueness of this organisation is that it endeavors to reach rural and other poor communities that would not have traditionally been included in similar or related projects. The organisation identifies the vulnerable groups so that they are accommodated and supported in the information society. Having access to information through the Internet can help these individuals and their communities better their lives. ICTs for Rural Africa is there to provide the skills to use a computer with more time spent on using the Internet as a source of information. If all people are well informed of opportunities around the world poverty will be reduced to zero. Information is knowledge and knowledge is power. The Internet has so much information on health issues, scholarships, job opportunities, export opportunities, access to funding, new farming methods, etc and it is our wish that every African gets access to this vital information.

I wanted to post some information concerning a project I am working on with TechCeFaCos in Kumbo, Cameroon. We collect computers here in Fredericton, NB, Canada, clean them and install Linux/software, make them Internet ready and will be shipping them to Kumbo. This will be an ongoing project. We are also hoping to open an ICT Training Institute to train post secondary students, as well as develop educational cd's and websites. Links to the project and those involved are: http://ict4dinafrica.ning.com/ http://computersforcameroon.wikispaces.com/ http://www.freewebs.com/irishcrows/ http://www.techcefacos.org/ |

I wrote my masters on ICTs and much of my focus was on Africa .... here is the intro page and if you look at the left side navigation you will see a section for Africa articles and projects as well. While this was completed in 2004, and therefore some of the links may no longer be relevant, perhaps this will provide you with some ideas for funding? Sounds like a great project... Keep us posted and wish you luck. I trust that you are also a member of DDN, the digital divide listserv? Andy Carvin started it up years back and it is still going strong.... Many ideas from there possible as well.

I'm not sure if it's the right place to post that information, but there is this french student organization who works on the same issues. Since 16 years the non-profit organisation "SIAD sans frontières" develops far-reaching IT projects from its base at Lille 1 University in France. In the past "SIAD sans frontières" has been active in Vietnam, Djibouti, Senegal, Cameroun, Mali and Guinea. The focus of its projects is the development and installation of high-end informational systems for local institutions like schools, government agencies or hospitals.
