The Association for Democratic Initiatives [ADI] was established in Gostivar, Macedonia in 1994. ADI is a multi-ethnic non-governmental organization devoted to building a civil society in Macedonia. The organization has a membership of 300 volunteers, and operates in 32 towns and villages. The organization originated as a core group of 30 volunteers who conducted voter education activities in conjunction with the 1994 national elections and 1996 local elections. The organization has since expanded its civic initiatives program throughout Macedonia. ADI is legally registered with the Republic of Macedonia and is designated as non-governmental organization authorized to conduct civic initiatives. It is governed by a 9-member board of directors and an advisory board.
ADI is a founding memberk of the Steering Committee of the Balkan Human Rights Network [BHRN], founding member and chair of the Coordination Committee of the South East Europe Refugee Assistance Network [SEE-RAN], Member of the European Committee on Refugees and Exiles [ECRE], and of UNITED, CIVITAS, SEE SA NGO Network and CIVICUS. ADI is a founder and member of several National Networks, such as the Anti-discrimination Network and the Minority Rights Protection Network.
